Socket-weld flanges are ideal for smaller pipes in low-temperature, low-pressure situations. They feature a simple installation process where the pipe is inserted into the flange and secured with a multi-pass fillet weld. These flanges have a recessed area serving as a pipe depth guide. Initially designed for high-pressure small diameter piping, they offer 50% more fatigue strength than slip-on flanges. A space is left between the flange and pipe to ensure proper bore dimension. Socket weld flanges are primarily used for small pipe sizes (½ to 2 inches) and offer mechanical strength comparable to slip-on flanges but with only one weld. They have the same static strength as slip-on flanges but 50% greater fatigue strength than double-welded slip-on flanges. These flanges connect to the pipe with a single fillet weld on the outside of the flange, requiring no weld preparation, reducing construction costs, and avoiding penetration of the flange bore.
